Lily Wong was six when she first picked up a flute, and she hasn’t set it down since. Her recent solo performances focused on classical flute works by Mozart, Faure, and Reinecke; as well as contemporary works by Elgar Burton and Adolphus Hailstork. Commended for her “beautiful, full sound,” her performances draw from a lifetime of excitement for music and aim to light that same spark for the listener. She’s earning a B.M. in Music Performance at Portland State University, is a student of Oregon Symphony’s Solo Piccolo, Zach Galatis, and is the Oregon Symphony’s Grant Writing Intern.
Lily has been a prominent performer for nearly as long as she’s been playing flute. In middle school she won the Greater Portland Flute Society’s Junior Young Artist Competition. In high school she joined the Metropolitan Youth Symphony and the Western International Band Clinic. She has performed Mahler, Beethoven, and Brahms symphonies with the Corvallis-OSU Symphony Orchestra, toured the Willamette Valley as a member of the OSU Wind Ensemble, played principal flute for the OSU Opera Workshop, and even joined the OSU Marching Band for one season. She currently plays in the PSU Wind Ensemble and PSU Flute Choir.
Off stage, she enjoys connecting and collaborating with other musicians. Lily has taught sectionals at middle schools, high schools, and band camps. She continues to teach from her studio based in Newberg, Oregon.
Going forward, her goals are to continue to teaching and to support musicians by working in music administration. When she’s not practicing, you can find Lily birding, making ceramics, or hanging out with her pet parrot, Shaka.
